Since there continues to be confusion regarding Private Practice please note that a psychological private practice differs from a Licensed Behavioral Health (LBH) agency and health related clinics that provide mental health intervention along with primary care. As a private practice we can only provide services to individuals who do not have severe symptoms and does not need after hour intervention. Individuals who need crisis intervention or casemanagement would need to be seen in a LBH agency. We employ individuals with a degree in Psychology who are Licensed or working toward Licensure. We have a scope of practice that we must adhere to and can only provide services to individuals who fall within that scope.

Due to some recent confusion we are providing the accepted definitions of the 6 primary types of mental health providers below.  Please take the time to review these definitions as each has a different focus, educational and licensure requirement, and type of intervention.  It is very important to understand these differences when choosing a provider for yourself or a family member as there are significant differences.)

Psychology is an academic and applied discipline that involves the scientific study of mental functions and behaviors. Psychology has the immediate goal of understanding individuals and groups by both establishing general principles and researching specific cases, and by many accounts it ultimately aims to benefit society.  In this field, a professional practitioner or researcher is called a psychologist and can be classified as a social, behavioral, or cognitive scientist.  Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental function in individual and social behaviors, while also exploring the physiological and biological processes that underlie cognitive function and behaviors .(Wikipedia)

The information provided below is to help with the understanding of mental health services and those professionals providing the services in order to help patients make an educated choice related to the service they need.

There are 6 primary types of mental health professionals listed in order of educational specificity.

Psychiatrist - is a medical doctor and the only professional that specializes in mental health and can prescribe medications.   Some psychiatrist also provide therapy, however, the focus is often related to understand the benefits of the medications along with the need to participate in another form of therapy/counseling to understand the mind/body contribution to both positive and negative outcomes. (Family doctors can prescribe medications for mental health concerns, but do not have specialized training or background in treating mental disorder.  Therefore, a family doctor most often refers the patient to a psychiatrist for individuals who need more than one specific medication or higher doses of a psychotropic medication to assure patient care and safety. In rural communities where transportation is an issue many patients have to rely on their family doctors who are often placed in a position of patient care vs the specific requirements related to their practice. With this in mind, please be aware of your doctor's position and be understanding of their restrictions vs feeling they do not want to help.)

Psychologist - (Most have doctorate degrees and referred to as doctor, however, in West Virginia psychologist cannot prescribe medications. Additionally, in West Virginia an individual with a Master's degree in psychology can be fully licensed if they can meet the national lisensure requirement and state standards for practice)   Psychologists can focus on either clinical or research work. Psychologist receive specific training in diagnosis, psychological assessment (testing) and a wide varieties of psychotherapies, research and more. As stated above, it is an academic and applied discipline that involves the scientific study of mental functions and behaviors including the physiological and biological process that underlie cognitive functions and behaviors.  Please note that to date only 1080 individuals have obtained a license in Psychology in the State of West Virginia, leaving the state, particularly rural areas, under served.  Only a small percentage of those 1080, who have obtained a license, are still practicing as some have since retired and/or passed away. Therefore, obtaining services from a licensed psychologist is limited in many areas of the state.

Clinical Social Workers - (Master's Degree in Social Work, MSW's) is a professional and academic discipline that seeks to improve the quality of life and subjective well-being of individuals, groups, and communities trough research, policy, community organizing, direct practice, crisis intervention, and teaching for the benefit of those affected by social disadvantages such as poverty, mental and physical illness or disability, and social injustice, including violations of their civil liberties and human rights.  They often carry the designation of LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) when they are doing psychotherapy.  Please note that although psychotherapy is provided by psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers there is a significant difference in focus, education, and application.

Psychiatric Nurses - Most are trained first as a regular registered nurse (RN) and then get specialized training in Psychiatry and some forms of psychotherapy.

Marriage and Family Therapist - Tend to have a Masters Degree but can have as little as a Bachelor's degree or less in some states as this designation varies from state to state.  California is the exception related to this licensure due to that states more stringent requirements (stated in the article titled 6 types of mental health professionals).

Licensed Professional Counselor - The requirements for this designation, which can be in addition to the professional's educational degrees, vary from state to state. Licensure for these individuals occur at the state level and requires a master's degree in counseling or a related field. They provide therapy to individuals/groups and in many states an LPC can practice independently.  Please note that the providers additional education is important to the individual receiving services since the designation of LPC is designation verses a degree.

Please do further research into the types of providers and understand what is available in your area. The title of therapist/counselor can be very misleading and the type of treatment an individual receives is usually based on the providers education, focus, and experience.  The article used to provide these descriptions concludes by stating that the key to choosing which one is right for you is to determine what kinds of things are important to you and finding a professional that seems to fit with your needs and personality. Often times, finding the right therapist or mental health professional takes more than one try.  You may need to "try on" a few professionals before finding out what feels right to you.  Don't be afraid to do this, as it is your well being and treatment you are investing in.

Additionally, please note that any bias found in these definitions of provider education and qualifications is likely due to the subconscious thought process, as again, we are a private practice psychological agency ran by psychologists and no misrepresentation is intentional as most has been taken directly from Wikipedia in an attempt to avoid any bias. If there is any part of this that is incorrect, please feel free to contact this office and any misrepresentation will be changed immediately upon verification.
